All About Northgate

We are a Northeast Columbus school located in the Sharon Woods or Northgate area.

Columbus City Schools Mission Statement: Each student is highly educated, prepared for leadership and service, and empowered for success as a citizen in a global community.

Northgate I.S. Vision Statement: Northgate Intermediate's Vision is to provide a positive, cooperative learning environment where students, staff, and families set high expectations, are engaged, and motivated to increase student academic and behavioral successes through quality learning opportunities and to prepare students for success in middle school. 

Curriculum: Core subjects, such as reading, language arts, math, science, social studies, health, art, music, and physical education are offered. The Northgate Intermediate staff aligns all instruction to the mandated Ohio Learning Standards for all academic instruction.

Reading Program: We use the ReadyGEN reading program, an integrated literacy program. ReadyGEN’s instructional approach focuses on integrating all of the literacy skills and foundational reading skills within the context of authentic reading selections. In conjunction with this series, we may use Benchmark Assessment Reading Level, MAP Reading and Math Assessments and DIBELS assessments to monitor our students’ progress. Additionally, many of our students are supported with small group instruction.

English as a Second Language (ESL):  As a designated ESL school, Northgate provides the following for its staff and students:
    • Tutorial assistance in content area subjects
    • An environment that fosters pride in native culture, establishes positive self-esteem, and facilitates acculturation into American society
    • Bilingual personnel who act as a liaison between the home, school, and community
    • Assistance to ESL and regular classroom teachers in best practices for working with students from diverse language and cultural backgrounds
Hearing Impaired (H.I.): As a designated school with a Hearing Impaired program, Northgate instructs students at the 4th and 5th grade level. We follow the Columbus City Schools Benchmarks for Learning while also developing the students' skills in communication, language concepts, socialization and physical education. The curriculum also includes special emphasis in speech and language development, reading, writing and career education.
Parent Involvement:  Northgate has an active Parent/Teacher Organization which meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:00 PM. We also have a parent consultant who collaborates with the PTO to host monthly activities for parents and community members.
Community Partnership:  Northgate ejoys a partnership with the Vineyard Church. We are also fortuante to train student teachers in partnership with Ohio Dominican University, Capital University, and The Ohio State University.
About Our Staff: 100% of our teachers are designated "Highly Qualified" by the Ohio Department of Education; 87% of our staff has a Master's Degree or higher.
